Digestive Conditions

While digestive conditions are more common than you may think, not many people talk about them.

The thing is, you do not need to suffer from these conditions. In this article, we will discuss some most common digestive disorders that you may want to get rid of.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

In certain conditions, the acid in the stomach may back up into your esophagus, resulting in a burning pain in the middle of your chest. This condition is known as acid reflux. This condition usually occurs at night or after meals.

The occurrence of this reflux once in a while is not something to worry about, but if you experience this condition more often, it may be a sign of GERD. According to a report, this disease affects 20% of Americans. If you have a burning sensation in your esophagus, trouble swallowing or breathing, or bad breath, you may want to speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

You can prevent this condition by avoiding foods and beverages that trigger symptoms. You can also take antacids or other over-the-counter medicines to counter this condition.

Gallstones

The hard formations inside your gallbladder are known as gallstones. According to a survey, about one million Americans get gallstones every year. These formations develop due to the presence of too much waste or cholesterol in your bile.

There is a duct between the gallbladder and intestines. The stones blocking this duct can result in sharp pain in the upper-right portion of the abdomen. Medications are available to dissolve these stones. If it doesn’t work, your doctor may choose to remove your gallbladder.

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease falls into the category of IBD, also known as inflammatory bowel disease. Although this condition can affect any part of the GI tract, it most commonly remains in the terminal ileum.

The exact reasons for this disease are not yet known. However, it is speculated that genetics may play a significant role in this regard. The symptoms of this disease may include rectal bleeding, weight loss, fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

You can manage this condition by avoiding alcohol, coffee, raw fruits and vegetables, carbonated drinks, red meat, and fatty foods.

Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is another condition that falls into the category of inflammatory bowel disease. This condition is pretty similar to ulcerative colitis from the perspective of symptoms.

You can take medication to control inflammation. Similarly, some dietary changes may help you manage this condition quite nicely. In severe conditions, your surgeon may want to remove the inflamed part of your bowel.

Diverticulitis

This condition involves the formation of small pouches in the weak spots of your digestive system. They usually develop in the colon. Although it can affect people of any age, older adults are the most affected segment of society in this regard. This condition can result in fever, chills, nausea, and abdominal pain. The most significant risk factor for this disorder is obesity.

If you have a severe form of diverticulitis, your doctor may choose to remove the affected part of your colon.
